An important substance specific to Gaultheria procumbens or ‘Wintergreen’ is an essential oil consisting mainly of methyl-salicylate. Wintergreen oil is used as a counter-irritant (cutaneous stimulant and promoting blood supply) in various articular ailments.
Rosmarinus officinalis or rosemary helps to improve the venous status and limit vasodilatation, which occurs in most articular inflammations.
Laurus nobilis or laurel has a detumescent effect on rheumatic pain.
Like Wintergreen, Betula alleghaniensis or yellow birch is a natural source of methyl-salicylate. The scent of its essence is also very similar.
